Firewood Information

Barn Stored Hardwood

Barn‑stored hardwood is naturally dried under cover in a ventilated barn, keeping the logs protected from rain while allowing steady airflow. This produces a moisture content of 20% or below, making the logs suitable for immediate use.

Hardwood burns hotter and for longer than softwood thanks to its density, giving you a slow, steady heat output and excellent efficiency. All logs are cut, split, cleaned and hand‑checked, then stored under cover until they reach the correct moisture level.

Our hardwood is sourced exclusively from local, sustainably managed British woodlands, with species typically including Oak, Ash, Beech, Birch, Alder and Cherry.

Unseasoned Hardwood icon

Unseasoned Hardwood

Unseasoned hardwood comes with a moisture level of around 50%, though this naturally shifts with the weather.
We can cut and prepare the logs to suit your stove or fireplace, with a minimum order of 2.25m³.
Because the wood isn’t Ready to Burn, it needs a long drying period — usually 18 months or more, depending on how it’s stored.
Since May 2021, UK rules require unseasoned logs to be sold only in loads of 2.25m³ or above.
If you want seasoned wood for next winter, it’s best to order a year or two ahead.

Hardwood or Softwood? Choose What Suits Your Fire

Same energy per kg — different burn styles.

🌳 Hardwood

  • Long, steady burn

  • Dense & space‑efficient

  • Ideal for overnight heat

🌲 Softwood

  • Quick to light

  • Fast, lively heat

  • Great for getting fires started

💧 Dry Logs = Better Burning

Seasoned wood burns hotter, cleaner and safer. Wet logs waste heat and create tar/creosote in your chimney.

Timber Origins icon

Timber Origins

All of our firewood is sourced from sustainably managed British woodlands, helping to reduce transport emissions, support local forestry jobs, and maintain healthy, responsibly harvested woodland. Using local timber also ensures full traceability from forest to fire, giving you confidence in both quality and environmental impact.

Our hardwood mix typically includes a balanced selection of native species such as Oak, Ash, Beech, Alder, Birch, Cherry and others, depending on seasonal availability. This blend provides a reliable, long‑lasting burn with excellent heat output.

Because our logs come directly from natural woodland environments, you may occasionally see bark, lichen or moss on the pieces. These are harmless, completely natural, and have no effect on heat output or burning performance.

We work closely with trusted British suppliers who follow responsible felling practices, ensuring woodland regeneration, biodiversity protection, and long‑term sustainability.

Seasoning & Processing icon

Seasoning & Processing

  • Freshly felled timber is stacked in large piles for several months, allowing moisture to begin escaping before processing starts.
  • Seasoning reduces moisture for cleaner, hotter burning and better air quality. Proper seasoning also reduces tar and creosote build‑up.
  • Each log is cut to length ( typically 9″-10″), split for faster drying, cleaned, sorted and hand‑checked for quality.
  • Splitting increases airflow and makes each log easier to move, stack and burn efficiently.
Stove & Chimney Maintenance icon

Stove & Chimney Maintenance

  • Keeping your chimney swept is essential for safe, reliable burning. It’s best done once you’ve finished using your fire for the season — it stops soot building up and avoids that musty smell later on.

Most insurers expect proof that your chimney has been professionally maintained, so always choose a registered sweep. Many can also help with things like rope seals, bird‑nest removal, safety checks and CO alarms.

Make sure you have a carbon‑monoxide alarm installed and test it regularly.

Guidance icon

5‑Step Stove Lighting Guide

  1. Use dry, seasoned or Ready to Burn logs (moisture ≤20%). Avoid treated wood, pallets, MDF or waste.
  2. Leave a thin layer of ash, check door seals, and make sure air vents move freely.
  3. Light using the top‑down method: logs at the bottom, kindling on top, natural firelighter in the centre, air controls fully open.
  4. Once hot, reduce air gradually and add logs little and often for steady heat.
  5. Sweep the chimney yearly, keep the stove area clear, and test your carbon monoxide alarm regularly.

Volume, Weight & Stacking icon

Volume, Weight & Stacking

Our firewood is supplied by measured volume, ensuring you receive a consistent load every time. Weight isn’t used because wetter logs are heavier but don’t provide any extra heat. With Pro‑Log Shropshire, you know the exact volume you’re ordering — no vague “trailer loads” or guesswork. If you’d like your logs neatly arranged in your store, we also offer a stacking service.

Stacking & Storage icon

Stacking & Storage

  • Loose logs take up more room because of the air gaps between them. Once stacked, the volume drops to about 60–70%. As a guide

Stacking your logs neatly saves space and helps them breathe. Pick a spot that’s sheltered from wind and rain — sunny locations are ideal.

If your logs are unseasoned, let the air circulate and avoid covering them completely. Barn‑stored and kiln‑dried logs can be covered because they’re already dry. Take your time stacking to keep the pile safe and secure.
